We want Tunisia to readmit its nationals in irregular situation” (French Ambassador)

(TAP) - France hopes that Tunisia would readmit its nationals in irregular situation, particularly «those who represent a security threat,» French ambassador to Tunisia André Parant said Tuesday.

He was speaking at a press conference on the outcome of the 3rd French-Tunisian High Council for Cooperation.

The return of these Tunisian nationals to their country «is in no way a subject of major tension with the Tunisian authorities,» he added.

On migration and mobility between Tunisia and France, the ambassador said dialogue remains the appropriate framework to find solutions.

France does not intend to prevent Tunisians from travelling to its territory or to limit their travel, «Only illegal migration is a problem for us. We want to remain an open country, especially for Tunisian students and young professionals,» he said.

Parant recalled that there are currently 13,000 Tunisian students in France, making them the 4th largest foreign nationality of students in France, after the Chinese, Moroccans and Algerians.

«We expect Tunisia to do its utmost to address irregular migration,» he added, underlining his country's readiness to help the Tunisian authorities to better control the migratory flows from their coasts.

«Tunisia remains the only country with which we have such an open mobility policy. We issue 150,000 short-stay visas per year to this country,» he indicated.

«We will resume issuing visas normally as soon as the health circumstances allow it.»
