Early screening centrepiece of awareness campaigns as Tunisia observes World Cancer Day

February 1, 2021

(TAP)- Tunisia is observing next February 4 World Cancer Day under the motto 'Screening, Only Way to Defeat Cancer.' The key importance of early screening will come under spotlight.

Breast cancer is the most commonly occurring cancer in women with 3,515 more cases in 2020, that is 58.7 per 100,000 inhabitants, data released by the Basic Healthcare Directorate show.

A further 2,388 men were diagnosed with lung cancer in 2020, that is an incidence rate of 40.7% per 100, 000 inhabitants. Tunisia also reported 1,058 more cases of colorectal cancer, a silent killer, among men, that is 18.1% per 100,000 inhabitants, and 1,132 among women.

Awareness-raising campaigns will be the centrepiece of the directorate's agenda for the observance of the event, in addition to three online training sessions geared towards physicians and an action plan in workplaces.

'I am and I will' was picked to be the theme for this year's global observance in a response to a three-year campaign (2019-2021) set in motion by the World Health Organisation and the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) to save millions of lives.
