Nabeul: Follow-up of studies relating to electric interconnection project between Tunisia and Italy

February 24, 2023

(TAP) - Monitoring the progress of studies on the implementation of the project of electrical interconnection and energy exchange between Tunisia and Italy, was the focus of a working session held Wednesday at the headquarters of the governorate of Nabeul.

The electricity interconnection project between Tunisia and Italy will be carried out over four years (2024/2028) with funds worth a total of 840 million euros.

It will cross four governorates, with Nabeul as the starting point, and consists of the installation of a 107 km submarine cable between Sicily, in the south of Italy, and Kélibia, to be then connected to a 5 km long underground cable to the 'Malaabi' industrial zone in the delegation of Menzel Temim, and to cross the governorates of Zaghouan, Manouba and Ben Arous to reach the Mornag electric station via a 113 km overhead line.

During this working session, Sami Amara, representative of the research department, recalled that the project is financed by the World Bank up to 12.5 million dollars, noting the progress at a steady pace of the studies of the maritime and terrestrial routes, and those relating to the environmental, economic and social impacts.

'It is an important project that will allow Tunisia to access 600 megawatts whenever the need arises and will open up great prospects for exporting electricity produced from renewable energy,' he told TAP.
