(TAP) - Ten more municipalities have been labelled tourist zones, and will accordingly benefit from interventions of the Fund for the protection of tourist zones, Minister of Tourism and Handicrafts Mohamed Moez Belhassine announced Monday in Hammamet.

These are the municipalities of Snad (Gafsa), Zarat and Dkhilet Toujane (Gabes), Beni M’tir (Jendouba), Bekalta (Monastir), Enfidha (Sousse), Ghomrassen (Tataouine), Mahres (Sfax), Kalaat Senan (Le Kef) and Beni Khedache (Medenine), he specified.

This pushes the number of tourist municipalities to 57, the Minister added, saying the aim is to make these areas levers for development and diversify the Tunisian tourist product.

Belhassine was speaking at the opening of the regular meeting of the local tourism delegates and inspectors, held in the presence of representatives of the new tourist municipalities.

He said the role these new municipal tourist zones should play in the development of the various forms of national tourism, including mountain, seaside, cultural, sports, natural, ecological and archaeological, through emphasising the assets and the specificities of each region.

The minister recalled that Tunisia welcomed about 6.4 million tourists in 2022 (70% of the indicators of 2019) with TND 4.2-billion receipts (76% of the receipts of 2019), thus exceeding the objectives drawn by the ministry.

The three-year action plan (2022-2024) set up by the department aims to reach 60% of the 2019 tourism figures in 2022 and 80% of these figures in 2023 and return to the pre-pandemic level in 2024.

'Overcoming the repercussions of the pandemic requires joining efforts in order to remedy the existing failures, particularly those related to air transport, the difficulties encountered by Tunisair, and the quality of the environment.'
