TAP) - Tourism Minister Mohamed Moez Belhassine on Wednesday called for speeding up the launching of the air link between the Tozeur-Nefta airport and international lines and for boosting the connection of the Gafsa and Gabes airports with domestic lines.

Taking the floor during a national seminar on 'the development of Saharan and oasis tourism,' Belhassine considered that the development of a tourist destination cannot be done in the absence of air transport.

He also called for the development of border posts and the creation of sustainable tourist circuits while promoting the handicraft products of the Tunisian South.

Belhassine underlined the need to improve, develop and diversify the offer of Saharan and oasis tourism, recalling that several tourist units have been shut down, notably in the regions of Kebili and Douz, where visits are not recommended by foreign embassies.

The minister pointed out the need to encourage the reopening of these structures by providing them with the necessary financing, to revise the financing mechanisms and to stimulate investments, notably in alternative tourist accommodation and sustainable tourism.

Belhassine urged the sector's stakeholders to focus their efforts on the promotion of this tourist product and the governance of the Saharan festivals' programming, given the start of the Saharan and oasis tourism season.

He also recommended creating a unified network bringing together the sector's various stakeholders to devise marketing programmes and a common national strategy for the development of the region's tangible and intangible heritage.

Economy and Planning Minister Samir Saied called for his part, to draw up a participative roadmap for the development of Saharan and oasis tourism involving all the stakeholders, referring to the public and private sectors and civil society organisations.

The goal, he explained, is to diversify the tourist offer, identify new innovative products, develop marketing mechanisms and promote the image of Tunisia as a tourist destination.

He recalled that the indicators of Saharan and oasis tourism dropped considerably compared to previous years, due to political and security instability, pointing out that in 2022, the first signs of improvement in the sector's indicators have been recorded with the arrival of 150 thousand tourists and the recording of 196 thousand overnight stays.

Saied recalled that the foreign financing intended for the outdoor and alternative tourism sector has reached TND 1,281 million in the form of donations to help carry out nearly 50% of the projects.
