Mahdia: Success of first organ removal operation on donor at CHU Taher Sfar

(TAP) - A multidisciplinary team from Mohamed Sfar University Hospital Center in Mahdia succeeded, Wednesday, the first operation of removing organs (a heart, kidneys, and corneas) from a donor, said coordinator of the operation and the anesthesiologist-resuscitator Karim Masmoudi.

Speaking to TAP on Thursday, Masmoudi underlined that the operation was performed on a brain-dead donor after his family's written consent, adding that the operation was performed by the medical team from the CHU of Mahdia supported by a medical team from Tunis and Monastir in coordination with the National Center for the Promotion of Organ Transplantation.

The successful operation is a message to raise citizens' awareness about the importance of organ donation and its humanitarian aspect, the doctor pointed out, adding that the removed limbs will be transplanted into 5 patients who can return to a normal life thanks to the transplants.
