Saïed calls for immediate action to reactivate Associations of collective interest

June 28, 2022

(TAP) - President of the Republic, Kaïs Saïed stressed, during a meeting held Monday at Carthage Palace, with Minister of Agriculture, Water Resources and Fisheries, Mahmoud Elyes Hamza, on the need to 'take immediate action to restore the water supply and reactivate the Associations of collective interest, before considering a possible rescheduling of their debts.

'It is necessary to give instructions to all parties concerned to ensure the resumption of activities of associations of collective interest, determine the responsibilities and then examine the possibility of rescheduling or lowering the debts incurred from the Tunisian Company of Electricity and Gas (STEG),' said Saïed, according to a video published on the page of the Presidency of the Republic.

He added that 'this urgent and vital issue will have to be resolved as Tunisians suffer from thirst in several regions, due to various considerations, including the water management policy adopted and the groups'.

'It is unacceptable to see Tunisians argue, sometimes, because of a puddle of water unsuitable for consumption, 'he said, criticising the phenomenon of water cuts in some regions and the quality of drinking water in the distribution network that forces Tunisians to resort to mineral water.

The head of state also recalled that Tunisia is endowed with several laws and has many dams neglected because of lack of maintenance.
