Number of forest fires down until June 20

June 23, 2022

(TAP) - The number of forest fires recorded until June 20, 2022 has dropped to 69, ravaging 85 hectares, in a country that applies the death penalty when the fire leads to death, said Zouhayer Ben Salem, Deputy Director of Forest Protection under the General Directorate of Forests.

Ben Salem told TAP, Tunisia recorded about 76 fires that destroyed an area of more than 200 hectares, between January 1 and June 20, 2021.

He added that a study on fires registered in the country in recent years concluded that nearly 96% of fires were caused by human activities, whether voluntary or not, while natural causes account for only 4%.

Those who set fire to forests are subject to severe penalties ranging from financial fines (between 50 and 150 dinars) to imprisonment (from 16 days to 3 months) and even death penalty, if the fire results in the death of a person.
