Asphalt platform inaugurated at Ras Jedir border crossing

(TAP) - The asphalt platform located at the border entry point of Ras Jedir, was inaugurated Tuesday in the presence of a UN delegation, a diplomatic representation of the Embassy of Japan in Tunisia and Medenine governorate local officials.

With a budget of 1,200 thousand dinars, the asphalt platform covers an area of 9000 m2 and will serve as a parking lot for trucks at the entrance to the Tunisian territory, said CEO of the National Office of land border posts under the Ministry of Transport, Jamel Zrig.

He added that this project, which was implemented with the support of Japan and several UN agencies, is part of an annual project to rehabilitate the border crossing.

The same source pointed out that the border crossing of Ras Jedir is experiencing a large flow, both in terms of passengers, estimated at 10,000 passengers per day in both directions, up to 24,000 on special occasions, as well as major commercial traffic, with 700 to 800 trucks per day, he said, noting that the project will be likely to shorten waiting times and facilitate the flow of vehicles.

The border crossing at Ras Jedir, which has a large traffic records a volume of trade transactions estimated at more than 3,300 million dinars, including 90% of exports, said head of the customs office of Ras Jedir Colonel Major Omar El Arf.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by representatives of the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), the World Food Programme (WFP), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), in addition to a diplomatic delegation from the Embassy of Japan in Tunisia.
