June 3, 2022

TAP) - A new pilot station of desalination of irrigation water by thermal (solar energy) was inaugurated Thursday in an agricultural farm in southern Gabes, as part of a cooperation between the Agency for the Promotion of Agricultural Investment (APIA) and the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ).

The new station will be used to irrigate some crops newly developed in the region including strawberries.

In a statement to TAP, Director of Energy at the National Agency for Energy Management (ANME), Nafaa Bakkari said that the use of solar energy in the process of desalination of water will help reduce energy costs and allow farmers in the region to invest in new plantations especially citrus and strawberries.

APIA Chief engineer Kaouther Kouki stressed the importance of the framework agreement that exists between the agency and ANME for cooperation in agricultural projects that make use of clean energy, noting that the APIA encourages the use of these energies not only in the pumping and desalination of water but also in processing industries.
