Self-sufficiency in vegetable oil requires cultivation of 100,000 hectares of rapeseed by 2030

May 19, 2022

(TAP) - Tunisia needs to increase the area of rapeseed to nearly 100 thousand hectares by 2030, to reduce imports of vegetable oils and achieve self-sufficiency in this product consumed by Tunisians, said President of the Association for Sustainable Agriculture (APAD) Abdelaziz Bouhejba.

'Tunisia has been able to reduce its imports by 70 million dinars, after it embraced crop rotation (rapeseed), 'said the official who spoke at the closing of the Maghreb Oilseeds Meetings.

He emphasised the importance of drawing the attention of the Ministries of Agriculture, Trade and Economy on the effectiveness of the crop rotation.

He added that the cultivation of rapeseed is not widespread in the southern Mediterranean. This crop is important for the production of vegetable oils and also to overcome the lack of inputs for the fodder industry.

'In Tunisia, farmers have begun to take an interest in this crop for 8 years. It is beneficial for soil fertility and could help improve the quality of production of field crops, including grain, 'added Bouhejba.

He recalled that the rapeseed planted area has extendedfrom only 400 hectares in 2014 to 15,000 hectares in 2021.

600 farmers have joined the cultivation of rapeseed, Bouhejba added.
