APIA launches ''Agri-accelerator Cluster'' in sheep-dairy and olive oil fields in Beja

April 26, 2021

(TAP) - The Agency for the Promotion of Agricultural Investment (APIA) launched the 'Agri-accelerator Cluster' to support young agri-entrepreneurs in the sectors of sheep and milk and olive oil in the northwest of Tunisia, specifically in the governorate of Beja. Launched in collaboration with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and the National Institute of Agricultural Research of Tunisia (INRAT), the Agri-accelerator Cluster is aimed at all project holders, aged between 18 and 40 years, residents in the governorate of Beja and willing to launch their own agricultural projects, processing or agricultural services in the sectors of sheep milk or olive oil, said APIA. Particular emphasis will be placed on responsible investment projects that contribute to territorial development in the region and are likely to have a positive impact on the socio-economic and environmental The objective of this support programme is to strengthen the competitiveness of young agri-entrepreneurs to penetrate local and international markets and to improve the attractiveness of agri-food sectors that are characterised by a high potential for investment and job creation. For APIA, the agricultural and agribusiness sectors in Tunisia can be an engine for growth and development, and an opportunity for these young people. Some sectors, such as olive oil and dairy in the northwest, have a high investment potential and can help reduce unemployment and strengthen territorial development. The unemployment rate of young people aged 15 to 35 years is very high and is around 35% in the interior regions, particularly in the region of Beja in north-west Tunisia. This pushes a significant number to the rural exodus and emigration, often at the risk of their lives. In this context, investment by and for young people, who are vectors of change, contributes to the sustainable development of rural areas.
