Natural gas resources up 7% in 2020 (ONE)

February 14, 2021

TAP) - Tunisia's natural gas resources (national production) reached 2,176 kilotonnes of oil equivalent (kTOE) in 2020, up 7% compared to the same period last year, according to the latest figures released by the National Observatory of energy (ONE).

This rise is due to the contribution of the Nawara, Barka and Baguel Tarfa fields, which managed to compensate the drop reported in the production of other fields, and the 19% rise of the royalty on Algerian gas exports to Italy through the pipeline crossing Tunisia.

The overall natural gas demand for power generation edged down 5% in the 2019 and 2020 period, to 4,849 kTOE.

This drop has been recorded notably since March 2020, following the slowdown of some economic activities after the general then partial lockdown period decreed by the government to stem the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The power generation sector remains by far the largest consumer of natural gas (76% of the overall demand in 2020) as it is 97% based on natural gas.

Besides, the household electricity end-use consumption dropped by 13% in 2020.
