Tunisia seeks to export 70 thousand tonnes of packaged olive oil by 2025

January 17, 2021

TAP) - Tunisia plans to export 70 thousand tonnes of packaged olive oil by 2025, against 27 thousand tonnes exported last year, said president of the Chamber of Olive Oil Exporters, Chihab Ben Slama.

Olive oil exports account for 6% of Tunisia's exports and 45% of all agricultural product exports, he said in this context.

Ben Slama, who was speaking at a remote meeting with Chinese officials and importers, said Tunisia produces about 7% of international olive oil. 79% of its exports are directed to Europe, 16% to America and 3% to Asia.

In addition, he noted that the consumption of olive oil has doubled globally over the last three decades and tripled for non-producing countries such as China and a number of South Asian countries.

During the webinar, the official spoke about the difficulties impeding the rise of exports to China, including administrative obstacles and those caused by geographical remoteness.

For his part, the President of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Agricultural and Food Products said the import of olive oil from Tunisia has fallen from 1,300 tonnes during the 2012 and 2013 season to 100 tonnes in 2019.

He urged a strategy to strengthen the presence of Tunisian olive oil on the Chinese market.

A visit to Tunisia for a delegation of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Agricultural and Food Products, to see closely all the links in the olive oil production chain was planned in 2020, but it was cancelled due to Covid-19, said Tunisia's ambassador in Beijing Dhiaa Khaled.

Tunisia, the world's second largest olive oil producer, exported about 365 thousand tonnes of olive oil during the 2019/2020 season, bringing in revenues of about 2225 million dinars.

It has maintained its position as the leading exporter of olive oil to Canada and the United States of America.
