Growth of tourism sector, engine of development for other sectors (Habib Ammar)

December 3, 2020

TAP) - The growth of the tourism sector, which provides 400,000 direct and indirect jobs, is an engine of development which has a knock-on effect on the other sectors (agricultural industry, etc.), said Minister of Tourism and Handicrafts Habib Ammar.

Tunisia is not the only one, everywhere in the world, the tourism sector has been totally paralyzed, with a 70% drop in the number of tourists during the first eight months of 2020, the minister added in his answer, on Wednesday, to the questions of deputies during the plenary session devoted to the examination of his department's budget.

He pointed out that the sector has posted, during the high season, a decline of 81% and 79% during July and August, respectively.

He indicated that the World Tourism Organisation (OMT) estimates that the return to the same pace of world activity in 2019 can only be in a year or two.

Ammar said that the second wave of the pandemic has had a harder impact, underscoring that the goal is to preserve the jobs and investments achieved for 60 years and to save as much as possible, within a year.

He pointed out that despite the few solutions, the country has tried to support the sector, recalling the various decisions that had been approved on November 6, by a small Cabinet meeting to support the sector and prepare for a possible improvement in June 2021 with the discovery of a vaccine.
