(TAP) - 'The first batch of COVID-19 vaccines will arrive in Tunisia next March,' Basic Healthcare Director and vaccination committee member Ahlem Gzara said.

'This batch consists of 93.400 doses of Pfeizer vaccine provided as part of the COVAX initiative which will help inoculate 46,800 health professionals,' she specified at a hearing session of the Health Minister and members of the scientific and vaccination committees, held Wednesday by the Health and Social Affairs Committee at the House of People's Representatives (HPR).

Tunisia will further receive between 200,000 and 150,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine as part of the COVAX initiative, and 100,000 of Pfeizer vaccines provided through a direct procurement from the lab, she added.

The official specified that Tunisia will also get 2 million doses of coronavirus vaccine through a direct procurement to vaccinate 1 million people, 4.3 million doses as part of the COVAX initiative and 2.4 million doses as part of the African initiative.

Consultations are underway to buy other doses in a bid to reach a total of 8.8 million doses to cover 5 million persons in 2021, she added.
