January 14, 2021

(TAP)- A joint committee tasked with the revival of the post-COVID-19 tourist activity has just been set up by decision of Minister of Tourism and Handicrafts Habib Ammar.

This committee, which will be composed of representatives of the relevant ministries, professionals of the trade and social partners, will be in charge of drawing up an integrated recovery plan to ensure the revival of the sector, says a press release issued on Tuesday evening by the Tourism Ministry.

Speaking during the first meeting of this committee held on Tuesday at the ministry's seat, Ammar indicated that the aim will be to develop and diversify tourist activities in all the regions of the Republic and to propose solutions likely to promote local and alternative tourism.

Mechanisms will also be devised to improve services at the level of border areas, to reinforce security and to guarantee preventive and health protection measures.

In this regard, he underlined the need to draw up, in the framework of this committee, a communication plan and campaign for the benefit of Tunisia at the national and international levels.

The Minister also pointed out that the final report of the committee's work, including all the recommendations, must be submitted to the Prime Minister before next March 20.

The tourism sector has been severely impacted after the first wave of the pandemic, recording a 71% drop in revenue during the high season (from July to September 2020), Ammar had said last November.

Likewise, the number of tourist entries and overnight stays fell by 88% and 83%, respectively during this same period.
