Russians pledged to provide first batch of COVID-19 vaccine at end January (Health Minister)

(TAP) - Tunisia is conducting official consultations to acquire Russian vaccine 'Sputnik V', Minister of Health Faouzi Mehdi said at a press conference on Tuesday evening.

The Russians pledged to provide Tunisia with a first batch of this vaccine is at the end of this month, he added.

In response to a question from TAP news agency about the quantities of Russian vaccine that will be provided, the Minister of Health said a remote meeting will be held with the Russian side Wednesday to discuss the quantity and technical measures to secure the vaccine as soon as possible.

He also indicated that Tunisia is conducting advanced contacts and discussions with other international laboratories to obtain the COVID-19 vaccine, adding that the ministry has granted the 'Pfizer' vaccine market authorisation in Tunisia.

The minister said Tunisia has decided to purchase the coronavirus vaccines from various laboratories that have been licensed to market their products, adding they will be chosen according to scientific data and after verifying their safety and efficacy.

On the other hand, the Minister of Health revealed the imminent launch of the online platform for the national COVID-19 vaccination campaign 'E-VAX' that will allow citizens to register in the vaccination system. Registration details will be announced in the coming days, he pointed out.

The Ministry of Health has identified the group of people who will have priority in vaccination, he further indicated, saying they are the elderly (over 60 years old), health and vital sectors personnel and people with chronic diseases.

The Minister of Health noted that the COVID-19 vaccination is free, voluntary and optional for every person.

The Ministry is working with regional and local authorities to define the vaccination centres that will open 7 days a week and those that will operate in the week-end.

This is besides determining the teams that will be deployed to offer vaccination in workplaces, nursing homes, prisons…, he added.
