Saharan tourism: tourists need only to apply health protocol, no mandatory quarantine required

(TAP) - Tourists coming to Tunisia as part of Saharan tourism will not be obliged to spend the mandatory quarantine period in hotels. It is enough for them to apply the health protocols of Tunisian tourism and to travel in supervised group tours, Minister of Tourism and Handicrafts, Habib Ammar said Monday.

Speaking at a press conference held at the Government Palace in the Kasbah, the Minister added that a programme to encourage domestic tourism will also be put in place until March 31, 2021.

It will be financed by the fund to develop competitiveness in the tourism sector and will be accompanied by a program to increase air links with the international airport of Tozeur-Nefta.

The Minister also said the Prime Minister has decided to speed up the implementation of structural reforms in the tourism sector.

A joint committee bringing together the Ministries of Economy, Finance and Investment Support and Tourism and the Central Bank of Tunisia has been formed to examine the structural problems of the sector, particularly indebtedness and to propose solutions within a period not exceeding 3 months.

All stakeholders have been invited to speed up the implementation of the decisions of the April 30, 2020 small Cabinet meeting dedicated to the tourism sector, he pointed out.

Regarding the current situation of the sector, the Minister said the tourism and handicrafts sectors are in total paralysis, especially following the restrictions decided a month and a half ago, after the the evolution of the health situation.

Also according to the Minister, the number of tourists arriving so far in Tunisia has fallen by 78% compared to the same period of 2019, that of overnight stays has also fallen by 80.5% and tourism revenues have fallen by 62%.
